Description

The barns at Small Shaw Farmhouse are two attached structures dated 1632 and 1687, with some alterations. They are built from coursed, squared rubble and feature stone slate roofs. Both barns are single aisled and positioned at right angles to each other. The earlier barn, which is on the right, consists of four internal bays and has a square-headed cart entry in the left bay that connects to the other barn. A projecting stone displays the date of construction. The right three bays extend as the aisle and include a chamfered entrance to the left with a cambered head, three small chamfered lights (two of which have round-arched heads with a spandrel motif), and three inserted windows. There is a slightly later small outshut at the rear, while the right gable has been significantly altered with later openings.

The later barn, which projects on the left, features a chamfered entrance on each side of a 20th-century lean-to addition at the gable. At the first-floor level, there is a central doorway with a quoined surround and a Tudor-arched lintel that bears the inscription "D IA E " R 1687 R H L R. To the right of this doorway is a three-light double-chamfered window with the mullions removed. The left return of this barn, which is the aisle, has a part-blocked chamfered entrance to the left and three later windows.

Inside the earlier barn, there are jowelled arcade posts that are braced to the arcade plate and tie-beams, along with 19th-century king-post trusses, purlins, and rafters. The junction between the two barns is open and features an open truss with two orders of struts and an additional supporting post. The interior of the later barn has not been inspected.
