Description

This is a pair of grave slabs located approximately 2 metres north of the east end of the chancel of the Church of All Saints in Cawthorne. They date from the early 18th century and are made of sandstone.

The left slab is plain with some ornamentation at the top and commemorates Elias, son of Jonas and Martha Newton, who died on 21st February 1716. It also lists Jonas Newton, who died in August 1720, Martha Newton, who died on 10th May 1727, and Thomas, son of John and Anne Right, who died on 22nd April 1726.

The right slab features a moulded surround and an elaborately carved top in relief, depicting flowers in the centre and winged angels in the corners. It commemorates Edward Rhoades of Cawthorne Hall, who died on 16th January 1737, and includes a short poem. Additionally, it lists Alice, daughter of Thomas and Ann Rhoades, who died on 19th May 1744 at the age of 3 months, as well as Joseph, son of Thomas and Ann Rhoades, who died in infancy in 1746, and Benjamin, son of Thomas and Ann Rhoades, who died in infancy in 1750.
