Description
Knabbe's Hall is a large farmhouse built in the third quarter of the 17th century for William and Elizabeth Wood of Wortley Forge. The front is made of ashlar stone, while the rest of the building is constructed from coursed rubble with quoins. It features a stone slate roof and stands two storeys high with attics. The façade has three bays and three gables, with a plinth at the base. A two-storey gabled porch is located on the right side of the central bay, which is slightly set back. The open porch includes a well-crafted moulded doorway with an ornamental lintel supported by moulded imposts. Above the door is an iron plaque displaying the Royal coat of arms and the date 1674, along with a sundial at the apex of the gable.
The windows are double-chamfered, featuring a two-light window on the first floor of the porch, cross-windows in the left bay, and 4 over 4-light windows in the central and right bays, which include king mullions. There is a small two-light window to the right of the porch and a two-light attic window in each gable apex. A continuous drip mould runs between the floors, and lead rainwater heads are dated 1666. The gable copings are moulded with apex finials, and there are low ashlar stacks, one on the left gable and one (rendered) between the middle and third bays. The rear of the building has a small outshut to the right, later additions in the centre, and various double-chamfered windows. The left and right returns mainly feature two-light double-chamfered windows.
Inside, the farmhouse retains its original front door and panelled rooms with original doors. The ceilings are adorned with moulded plaster, and there are turned-baluster staircases. The roof structure consists of principal rafter trusses with curved, raking queen struts and massive tie-beams. An attic gable houses a dovecote. Knabbe's Hall is an excellent example of this type of building.
