Description

This is a cruck-framed barn, likely dating back to the 16th century or earlier, and probably encased within the 17th century. It is located along the north side of the farmyard at Dodworth Moor End Farm, off Moor End Lane, Silkstone Common. The barn is constructed of coursed rubble with quoins, and has a Welsh slate roof with three courses of stone slates at the eaves. It comprises five internal bays. A central, full-height, square-headed cart entrance is quoined, with some 20th-century stonework to the jambs. Ventilation slits are present. A 20th-century dormer has been added to the right end.

Inside, there are four cruck trusses. The central two have extended tie-beams carrying wall plates and high collars. The end trusses originally had low collars, with mortices indicating they were closed, suggesting the barn roof was probably hipped or half-hipped. The eastern truss features a sawn-off tie-beam with a king post braced to the ridge. The western truss has sawn-off wall ties.
