Description
Hill Top Cottages comprises a group of cottages dating to the 17th century, with later alterations. The cottages are constructed of thinly coursed rubble with quoins, and the front is rendered. The roof is covered with stone slates, partially covered with bitumen. The main three-cell range has a lower, later, gabled wing to the rear left, and a parallel range to the rear right, creating a U-shaped plan. A 20th-century glass porch occupies the near-central entrance. An entrance with a cambered head is located at the right end. Two double-chamfered windows remain at the right end: one of two lights to the ground floor and one of three lights to the first floor, both with one mullion missing. Other windows are of the 18th or 19th century style, with square-cut surrounds; those to the left end were probably originally of three lights. The gables have hollow-chamfered copings on moulded kneelers. Low-corniced ashlar stacks are present to the left and along the ridge. A taller, corniced ashlar stack with twin flues is located to the right, and a similar stack exists on the rear range. The left return has double-chamfered windows, with mullions removed, and a later entrance. Blocked ventilation slits are visible in the gable apex. The interior has been altered.
