Description

The Silkstone War Memorial, commemorating the First World War and Second World War, was built in 1922. It was designed by London architect L H Bucknell and sculpted by Mr Gelder of Silkstone Common.

The memorial features a limestone cross that slightly tapers and has a recessed border with a relief carving of a sword wrapped in a laurel branch. The cross stands on a square base with a chamfered top, which is supported by a deep, rectangular base made from two large blocks of stone. The lower block extends slightly to form a plinth, which is widened by additional blocks of the same height on each side. These side blocks have smaller tops that display the years '1914' on the left and '1919' on the right. The central upper block is inscribed with 'IN / MEMORY'. The lower central plinth lists the surnames and initials of 12 men, while the right-hand flanking plinth has two surnames and initials. The left-hand flanking plinth bears the inscription '1939-1945' along with three names. All text is presented in applied lead lettering. The memorial is set on two rectangular steps, with the upper step being deeper, and is flanked by a low, coursed stone wall that returns to meet the sides of the deep plinth.
