Description

The Serpentine Bridge, dated 'S: 1758', is a bridge located in Stainborough Park, built for the 2nd Earl of Strafford. It is constructed from rock-faced, rusticated sandstone ashlar and features a single span. The ashlar soffit supports a round arch with voussoirs. A band and ashlar blocking course slope up from each side to a horizontal section above the arch, with the date displayed at the center of the south side. There are later stone steps at the south-east corner and stone benches set behind the parapet, which originally had a balustrade, as illustrated in Country Life on October 25, 1924.
