Description
The entrance gateway and gates to Stainborough Park were built around 1768 for the 2nd Earl of Strafford. They are constructed from coursed, squared sandstone with ashlar dressings and feature wrought-iron gates. The gateway consists of a single archway flanked by wing walls. It has rusticated quoins and voussoirs, an impost band, and a band above the arch, with moulded pediment copings that have ball finial bases. The wing walls have copings that extend from the impost band and end in ashlar piers, each adorned with a band and ball finial base. Stone brackets rise from the wing walls to support the central section. The old iron gates, which may be original, include dog bars beneath a scrolled panel and additional scrolls below the curving top rail, with spear finials on all bars. Ball finials from the gateway are now preserved in the garden of Nos 1-3 Park Drive (Menagerie House). This gateway served as the main entrance to Stainborough Park from the north.
