Description
Kembla is a mid-18th century schoolroom, now converted into two dwellings, situated on the Wentworth Castle estate. It has undergone 20th-century additions and alterations. The building is constructed of coursed, dressed sandstone with a 20th-century cement-tile roof. Originally a single storey, it now includes an attic. The main front elevation, which is five bays wide, features five round-arched panels separated by ashlar piers with impost blocks beneath rubble-stone arches. Bays 1 and 5 have 20th-century casement windows set within original square-faced surrounds and projecting sills. Bay 2 has a part-glazed door beneath a casement window, also in a square-faced surround. Bays 3 and 4 contain a 20th-century conservatory and a weatherboarded dormer, respectively, with the third bay’s arch broken to accommodate the dormer. Bay 4 retains the original doorway with a four-pane overlight and a casement window above. A small wallstone ridge stack with a band is present. The right return side mirrors the main elevation with three smaller round-arched panels and ashlar plinth blocks, with a casement in the central bay; the gable features an attic window with a cambered lintel. The left return is similar. The interior has been remodelled. Extensive additions on the north side are not considered to be of special interest.
