Description
This is a late 19th-century bank, shop, and office building on a corner site. The construction is of coursed squared rubble with ashlar dressings, covered by a Westmorland slate roof. The building is two storeys high with an attic, and features a curving, asymmetrical facade of ten bays. All doors and windows are set within elliptical arches. The central three bays, occupying the corner, are symmetrical and feature a central doorway with a moulded surround. To either side are large shop windows with elaborate spandrel decorations and joggled lintels. The four bays to the left have a doorway in each side, the left doorway being more elaborate with pilaster jambs, a pulvinated frieze, and a triangular pediment. Between the doors are two smaller and plainer windows. The three bays to the right have a simpler design, including a three-light window with elliptical-headed lights, and two doorways. Two moulded cornices delineate the floors. First-floor windows have two and three lights, as at ground level, with a single central light. The left two bays are topped by a shaped gable with an ashlar stack at the apex, while the right two bays have a plainer gable with a finial. The roof is curved and incorporates three gabled dormers. Several stone stacks are present, featuring ashlar strings and cornices. This building occupies an important corner site.
