Description
Nos 5 and 7 Market Street is a house with shops, dating from the mid-18th century. It is constructed of coursed squared stone and features a stone slate roof, although No 7 has concrete tiles. The building stands three storeys high, with No 5 having two bays and No 7 projecting forward with one bay.
No 5 includes a late 19th or early 20th-century shop front on the left and a quoined entrance on the right, which has an adjoining 19th-century four-pane sash window. In front of the shop front, there is a re-set stone dated 1726 with the initials J J S in a circle. The first and second floors of No 5 have four-pane sashes with a band between the floors. There are signs of altered openings on the upper floors, including a blocked doorway on the right side of the first floor.
No 7 features a 20th-century shop front and a single sash window on the first and second floors, with a band that continues from No 5. The building has coved and moulded eaves cornices, gable copings on moulded kneelers, and two prominent ashlar stacks along with one brick stack on No 7.
On the left return, there is a blocked arcade at ground level consisting of three columns on square bases and a corner pier, all topped with capitals. The first floor has two blocked windows, and there are two small round-arched lights at the gable apex. The rear of the building has 19th and 20th-century rebuilding and additions that are not of special interest.
