Description
Nos 1 and 3 Market Street is a former Cloth Hall, now used as shops, built in 1768 by John Platt of Rotherham. The central part of the building was infilled, likely in the 19th century. It is constructed of coursed, squared stone with ashlar on the front central bay and features a stone slate roof with glass in the center. The building has two storeys and was originally U-shaped, but is now infilled, consisting of four bays. It has rusticated quoins and a deep ashlar plinth.
The central two 19th-century bays are set back slightly and feature a 20th-century shop front on the ground floor, with two 4-pane sash windows on the first floor under flat arches. Above this, there is an open modillioned pediment with a parapet and plain acroteria. Each side bay has a large round-arched shop window on the ground floor with later glazing and a single sash window above, similar to the front. The side bays have hipped roofs.
At the rear, the central bay projects slightly and has an open pediment. The central round-arched ground-floor opening is now partially blocked, and the side bays have similar blocked openings. There are various casements, some from the 20th century. The left return has seven bays with round-arched windows on the ground floor and 4-pane sashes above, some of which have been altered. The right return is similar, with all ground-floor windows blocked and some first-floor windows altered.
