Description

SK29NE HUNSHELF COTE LANE (east side), Hunshelf 11/50 Two cottages adjoining and to south of Wortley Top Forge (formerly listed as 28.5.70 The Cottages, Top Forge, Wortley) GV II Two cottages. Early C18, wing late C18. Coursed rubble stone, brick wing, Welsh slate to upper roof, stone slate to lower roof. Single-cell cottages, that to right with rear wing, giving L-shape. Two storeys, one 1st-floor window each. Left cottage has two 2-light double-chamfered windows to ground floor and one to 1st floor (mullions removed), plus a further blocked light. Straight joint with quoins to right between cottages. Right cottage has a single-light window to each floor and a slender light to far right at intermediate level. Beyond this is the forge building (q.v.). Two brick stacks. Rear: the brick wing is to the left. The main part has a later central door and two bays of 4-pane sashes in plain surrounds. Right return: single-storey rubble-walled lean-to addition. Blocked 1st-floor window, and blocked 2-light double-chamfered window in gable apex. Interior: moulded beams to ground floor. M. P.
