Description
Top Forge Cottage is a late 18th century building that was originally an office but is now used as a cottage. It features coursed rubble and ashlar construction with slate roofs, and has a lateral and a gabled wall stack. The cottage is a single storey plus attic and has a three-bay front. The central entrance is a 20th century glazed door that is accessed by five steps. To the left of the door is a single glazing bar sash window, and further left is another single glazing bar sash set in the projecting angle facade; both windows are connected by a continuous cill band. To the right of the door is a tripartite plain sash window. Above the central door, there is a four-light casement window in a gabled dormer. This building served as the former office for Wortley Top Forge and is located within the context of this scheduled ancient monument. It is one of only three surviving water-powered hammer forges in the UK.
