Description

Forge Bridge is a bridge built in 1782 by Thomas Ramsden, located on Forge Lane at the north end of Wortley. It is constructed from coursed, dressed sandstone and features two spans with segmental arches that spring from a central pier. This central pier has triangular cutwaters topped with half-pyramidal shapes. A chamfered band runs above the arches, connecting the end piers, which project on the outer faces of the bridge. The bridge has deeply-coursed parapet walls with weathered copings, and the coping on the north-west end pier is inscribed with 'TR 1782'. The bridge spans the River Don and is partly situated in the parish of Hunshelf.
