Description

The east-west range of farm buildings at the north end of the farmyard at Birthwaite Hall Farm dates from the 17th century. It is constructed of coursed squared rubble and features a stone slate roof. The left end of the building has two storeys, while the right end has three storeys due to the sloping ground.

All window openings are double-chamfered with moulded surrounds. The left end includes six animal doors with quoined surrounds and deep lintels, topped by a continuous dripmould that serves as hoods over the doors. Some of these doors are partially blocked. The doorway furthest to the right is particularly elaborate, featuring moulded jambs and an ornamental lintel. Flanking these doors are single- and two-light windows, one of which is missing its mullion.

At the right end, there are two segmental-headed cart entries that share a common centre pier. Above these entries, on the first floor, is a symmetrical arrangement of four two-light windows with a continuous dripmould that rises as a hood over a central doorway, although the stairs to this doorway are now gone. There are eleven high-level windows, which are more closely spaced over the right end and relate to the arrangement of the lower openings. The gable copings are chamfered on moulded kneelers at the right end.

The rear of the building features double-chamfered windows at high level, including two two-light windows at the left end. Inside, the building has principal rafter trusses with massive tie-beams and intermediate collars. This structure is a particularly richly decorated example of its type.
