Description

Haigh Hall is a large house built in the early 18th century, possibly incorporating an earlier structure. It was constructed for the Cotton family, who were iron masters originally from Cheshire. The building features thinly coursed squared stone and a stone slate roof. It has two storeys and a symmetrical five-bay facade, with raised ashlar quoins, a moulded plinth, and a moulded band between the floors. The central doorway is framed by a moulded, eared architrave and topped with a triangular pediment. The windows are 12-pane sashes set in plain raised surrounds, and there are moulded gutter-brackets. The roof is hipped, with two broad ashlar stacks aligned at the center, the rear stack having a cambered access doorway.

To the right, there is a lower two-storey 20th-century link, featuring a central five-panel door with a glazing bar overlight in a moulded ashlar surround, flanked by narrow 8-pane sashes. Above this, there is a Diocletian window with a raised keystone. The rear of the house is similar to the front but plainer, with a central quoined doorway that is blocked and 12-pane sashes in moulded, chamfered surrounds. The first floor has only four windows. On the left return, there is an entrance to the left and a full-length sash window to the right, along with a central Venetian staircase window that has a small square light above.

Inside, the hall features a good dog-leg staircase with slender turned balusters and a ramped moulded handrail. The Venetian window with wooden columns is located at landing level. There are several pine-panelled rooms on both floors, along with several good fireplaces and six-panel doors. The cellars have brick arches.
