Description

Grimston Court is a house that has been converted into a nursing home, built in 1903 by W. Brierley for J. J. Hunt, with later additions and alterations, including a range to the left that is of no particular interest. The building is constructed of red brick in English bond with sandstone ashlar dressings and has a slate roof. It is L-shaped on plan and has a double-depth layout in the Jacobethan style.

The main range is two storeys high and consists of seven bays. It features a plinth and steps leading to the entrance in the slightly projecting, gabled third bay. The entrance has a Tudor arch with naturalistic decoration around it and is topped by a continuous hoodmould. There is a five-long-panel door within this entrance, and above it is a five-light oriel window with mullions and a transom. The remaining windows include single lights and two, three, and four-light cavetto-moulded mullion and transom windows. A first-floor band runs across the right three bays, and the first-floor sill band continues to the wing. A 20th-century fire escape is attached to the sixth bay, and the end bay projects at the first-floor level. A chimney is located between the sixth and seventh bays.

The wing is also two storeys and has four bays. There is a flight of steps leading to the end entrance, which features a five-long-panel door in a Tudor-arched surround. The second bay on the ground floor has a six-light canted bay window with mullions and a transom. The other windows are single light and two and three-light mullion windows, all set within quoined ashlar surrounds. The building has ridge stacks, some shaped like stars, some like diamonds, and some in clusters.

Inside, the ceilings feature Jacobethan moulded plaster decorations, and some ground floor rooms have panelling. There are three Jacobethan fireplaces, one made of ashlar and the others made of wood.
