Description

The North Eastern Railway Company war memorial is located at the head of Station Road, just inside the city walls. Made of Portland stone, the memorial features an obelisk on slightly slanted walls that enclose three sides of a shallow, stepped podium, which supports the Stone of Remembrance. The screen walls end in urn finials and are adorned with laurel swags and wreaths. The pedestal of the obelisk is intricately carved with a laurel wreath that surrounds the armorial shields of the North Eastern Railway Company. A central dedication panel on the screen wall is draped in carved laurel garlands and is flanked by panels that list the names of 2,236 men from the North Eastern Railway Company who died in the First World War. Behind the Stone of Remembrance, there are 15 slate panels engraved with the names of those who lost their lives in the Second World War.
