Description
The war memorial is a tall (13 meters high) obelisk made of Portland stone, standing on a tall pedestal and set on a circular stepped base of grey granite. At the top of the obelisk, there are four crosses carved in relief, each surrounded by bronze wreaths. The obelisk features a moulded base and a reeded band. Each corner of the pedestal is supported by stepped buttresses that hold four over life-sized bronze statues, which represent the Navy, the Infantry, the Artillery, and the Air Force, all depicted with their arms reversed and heads bowed. The south face of the obelisk is inscribed with the words "IN MEMORY OF OUR GLORIOUS DEAD."
On the front face of the pedestal, a granite panel is inscribed with "IN GRATEFUL MEMORY OF 3719 MEN OF THE LONDON AND NORTH-WESTERN RAILWAY COMPANY WHO FOR THEIR COUNTRY, JUSTICE AND FREEDOM SERVED AND DIED IN THE GREAT WAR 1914-1919 THIS MONUMENT WAS RAISED BY THEIR COMRADES AND THE COMPANY AS A LASTING MEMORIAL TO THEIR DEVOTION." Additionally, stone inscription panels on the east and west sides honor employees of the London Midland and Scottish Railway Company, which absorbed the LNWR in 1921, who died in the Second World War with the inscription "REMEMBER THE MEN AND WOMEN OF THE LONDON MIDLAND AND SCOTTISH RAILWAY 1939-1945."
