Description

The gates and gate piers to the War Memorial Garden in York were constructed around 1924 in a style reminiscent of the 18th century. They were designed by Sir Edwin Lutyens and are made of limestone and wrought iron. The gate piers have a square plan and feature cornices and ball finials. The ironwork is painted in black and gold. On either side of the gates, there are ironwork panels with finials, connected by an overthrow that displays the City shield of arms at the center. The gates are aligned with and face the City War Memorial.
