Description
The York City War Memorial, located in the War Memorial Gardens overlooking the River Ouse and St Mary’s Abbey to the north, is a significant structure made of Portland stone. Designed by Sir Edwin Lutyens, the memorial features a slender, tapering War Cross that stands approximately 10 meters tall. The shaft has a lozenge section, and the short cross arms are connected to the base by stop chamfers and torus moulding.
The base consists of four stepped rectangular blocks of varying heights, which rest on a square, undercut platform. This platform is supported by two additional square blocks and two shallow square steps. The largest block of the base has a dedicatory inscription carved into its south face, which reads: "TO THE CITIZENS OF YORK 1914 – 1918 1939 – 1945." On the opposite face, the inscription states: "THEIR NAME LIVETH FOR EVERMORE."
