Description
The Roman wall located approximately 20 meters south-east of Monk Bar is a Grade I listed structure. This wall is part of the north-east section of the Roman fortress, dating back to around 200 AD, built on foundations that date to about 110 AD. It was constructed by the IXth and VIth Legions. The earlier foundations consist of clay and cobble, while the later structures feature a limestone rubble core. The inner side of the wall is faced with dressed limestone, and the outer side is made of ashlar. The wall measures approximately 60 meters in length and stands about 5 meters high in front of the angle tower, which has a chamfered plinth and cornice, though the former parapet and walkway are now lost. The remains of the angle tower rise to about 2 meters and are roughly rectangular in shape, built against the curving wall of the fortress's east angle. Additionally, there is an interval tower located approximately 40 meters north-west of the east angle tower, which is about 0.66 meters visible above ground and also roughly rectangular in plan.
