Description

Toll Bar Cottage is a likely early 19th century building located on the west side of Shipton Road in Skelton. It is constructed of brick and rendered, topped with a slate roof. The cottage is a single storey with three bays, featuring a projecting central canted bay. There is a parallel rear wing built in a similar style, dating from the 20th century. The central entrance consists of a six-panel door, and there are three-light cross windows with a central top opening light, all adorned with segmental brick arches. The roof is hipped over the canted bay and includes a finial, with a central stack. The York to Northallerton Road was first turnpiked in 1752, which adds historical significance to the cottage.
