Description

Skelton Hall is a house built in 1824, with 20th-century alterations. It was constructed for Mrs. Mary Thompson, the widow of Henry Thompson of Kirby Hall. The building features white brick and a Welsh slate roof. It has two storeys and seven first-floor windows, with a central five-bay section that projects forward. The entrance includes a double-leaf glazed door set within a Doric porch, flanked by unequal six-pane sash windows. The left wing has three 20th-century casement windows, while the right wing contains a 20th-century conservatory. A continuous first-floor band serves as a sill for the sashes, which have glazing bars, and all windows are topped with flat brick arches. There is a decorative band above the first-floor windows and a wide cornice. The central section has a hipped roof, with chimney stacks at the left end and rising through the roof pitch.

Inside, the hall has been significantly altered due to the conversion of the house into two dwellings. It features a round arch supported by fluted pilasters and a moulded frieze. The doors to the reception rooms are framed in fluted architraves, and there is a fine cast-iron grate in the study. The original staircase, which has a cast-iron balustrade, remains but is no longer in its original position.
