Description

The gazebo, or garden temple, located 50 meters north of The Fox Inn, was built in 1795 for John Dodsworth of Poppleton House. It is constructed of red brick with ashlar dressings and features an asphalt roof. The structure is circular in plan and single storey. The north river front is supported by four Roman Doric columns that hold up a fluted frieze, which is accessed by three steps. The rear wall is made of brick and topped with a plain ashlar frieze, while the inner surface is plastered. The gazebo has a conical roof, and inside the ashlar frieze is a worn datestone inscribed with "I D 1795."
