Description

The Bottesford and Yaddlethorpe War Memorial is a First World War memorial that was unveiled in 1922, with additions made after the Second World War. It is located facing Manor Road, within the churchyard, approximately 160 meters north-west of the Church of St Peter ad Vincula. The memorial has a square plan and is made from Sicilian marble, featuring engraved and leaded lettering. It stands on a square, slabbed base that is enclosed with a low rail supported by concrete posts.

The memorial includes a statue of a winged figure representing Peace, which holds a wreath and is set on a square pedestal with a moulded architrave and base. Each side of the pedestal has a carved panel. The front-facing east panel has the words ‘IN MEMORY’ carved above an inscription that reads: ‘OF/ THOSE WHO GAVE THEIR/ LIVES FOR OUR COUNTRY/ FROM/ BOTTESFORD-HOLME/ AND YADDLETHORPE/ IN THE GREAT WAR OF/ 1914 1918./ (SEVEN NAMES)/ THEIR NAME LIVETH/ FOR EVERMORE’. The south face of the pedestal is inscribed: ‘IN/ GRATEFUL/ MEMORY OF/ THOSE WHO GAVE THEIR/ LIVES FOR OUR COUNTRY/ FROM/ BOTTESFORD/ AND YADDLETHORPE/ IN THE GREAT WAR OF/ 1939 - 1945./ (NINE NAMES)’.
