Description
The Ashby (Scunthorpe) War Memorial is a First World War memorial built after 1919 and altered following the Second World War. It features a square plan and is made of a stone shaft topped with a marble pillar and plinth.
Located prominently by the roadside in front of St Paul’s Church and east of the Church Hall, the memorial is set within a paved area that includes a flowerbed designed in the shape of a cross to the west.
The memorial consists of a Celtic cross and a Sword of Sacrifice mounted on a stone shaft, which stands on a marble pillar and plinth, all resting on a four-stepped base. At the back of the base, there are two pairs of pillars that support a low wall. This wall is engraved with a wreath and the dates 1914 and 1918.
The main inscription, in pale lettering on the front of the plinth, reads: "TO THE GLORY OF GOD AND IN MEMORY OF THE MEN OF ASHBY WHO FELL IN THE GREAT WAR 1914-1918 (NAMES) WORTHY OF HONOUR." Below this, on the front face of the upper step of the base, is an additional inscription: "1939-1945." The names of the fallen are inscribed on the three remaining faces of the plinth.
