Description
Brumby House is a house located in Scunthorpe, with a plaque on the rear wing that is initialled and dated T I 1705. The house was refronted in the early 19th century and has a later rear extension. It underwent renovations, including the replacement of windows and doors, in 1979. The building is constructed of brick, with the extension made of coursed ironstone rubble and rendered. It features a pantile roof with stone coping and brick stacks, and is designed in an L-plan with central entrances in both wings.
The main front faces south and consists of five symmetrical bays. It has a plinth and a panelled door beneath a rectangular four-pane overlight. The windows are 16-pane sashes, with the central first-floor window being recessed. There is a flat cornice band, stone-coped gables, and an end stack on the right. The left return has three bays with an extension to the left, featuring a panelled door and rectangular four-pane overlight beneath a moulded brick date plaque with a raised border and a winged cherub's head. It also has 16-pane sashes and an attic casement to the right, along with a massive axial stack.
Inside, features likely dating from 1705 include a closed string staircase in the front wing with vase balusters, a wide segmental-arched chamfered brick fireplace on the ground floor left, and ovolo-moulded ceiling beams with tongue stops in the three main ground floor rooms.
