Description

The Ukrainian Catholic Church, originally a courthouse, was built in 1895 and designed by County Surveyor James Thropp. It features red brick construction with Ancaster stone dressings and Welsh slate roofs. The building has a U-shaped plan and is characterized by a street front that has a recessed center, showcasing three round-arched ashlar doorways. Each doorway is adorned with moulded arches, rusticated voussoirs, keystones, and truncated Ionic pilasters leading to an ashlar entablature. The doors are double eight-panel with glazed fanlights above. A plaque dated 1895 is set into the brick parapet, which has ashlar coping, a small central gable, and ball finials.

Flanking the main entrance are low single-storey wings; the left wing is smaller with two plain sash windows, while the right wing has three plain sash windows, both featuring a linking moulded hood band and a small fixed light above. The north-west front includes a tall gable on the right with a large six-light cross mullion window and a two-light mullion window above it. The left side has a low wing with a single and a four-light mullion window, both with plain sashes. The south-east front mirrors this design but features only a four-light mullion window in the low wing.

Inside, the former courtroom retains its original wooden roof with exposed trusses supported by ashlar corbels. The interior also includes a panelled wooden dado and classical wooden doorcases with six-panel doors. Late 19th-century wooden pews were added during its conversion to a church.
