Description

This is a medieval cross base made of limestone ashlar, located approximately 0.5 metre west of the road verge on the west side of Appleby Ermine Street. It features a two-tier octagonal drum pedestal sitting on a square base, standing about 40 centimetres high overall. The top has an empty square socket for a shaft. It is likely that this cross base was originally a wayside cross, although it is no longer in its original position. Local tradition suggests that this cross base, along with another nearby to the west, was brought from Thornholm Priory, which is located 2 miles to the south.
