Description
Ermine Farmhouse is a late 18th century to early 19th century farmhouse that has been converted into three houses, with later alterations and rear extensions. The building is constructed from coursed limestone rubble with brick dressings, featuring a right gable-end and stacks, and a later 19th century rear extension made of squared ironstone with brick dressings. It has a pantile roof and a wrought-iron porch with a lead roof. The layout is T-shaped, consisting of a four-room front that includes a two-room central entrance-hall section to the left, and a single-room rear wing that was extended in the later 19th century (No 39). There are later outshuts to the rear right that provide entrances to Nos 41 and 43.
The farmhouse is two storeys high with six first-floor windows. It has a plinth and quoins, and features a 19th century open trellised porch with a round-arched entrance, flanked by ornate panels beneath a swept hood with a valance. The entrance includes a six-fielded-panel door beneath a plain overlight, flanked by single 16-pane flush sashes with segmental header brick arches and projecting sills. To the right, there are two 12-pane sashes with similar arches and sills, along with a single inserted 8-pane sash. On the first floor, there are three unequal 12-pane sashes to the left, and two unequal 9-pane sashes and one unequal 6-pane sash to the right. The building features stepped eaves, brick coped and tumbled gables, and a 19th century rebuilt axial stack and end-stacks, with the left stack having a cogged brick cornice.
Inside, there is an open-well staircase with a closed string, plain newels, and turned balusters (the balustrade was boxed-in at the time of resurvey). The ground floor left room has a ribbed plaster cornice with a lion's head ornament.
