Description

This is a late 18th- and early 19th-century house, originally built for William Marris, and later divided into two residences. Minor alterations occurred in 1833 for Lady Boynton, with further additions to the rear in 1931 and 1978. The house is constructed of coursed limestone rubble and brick, with stucco on the front and right return, and colourwashed on the left. It has a slate roof. Designed in a classical style, the house follows a three-room-wide, one-room-deep plan, with a stairhall situated at the rear of the central entrance hall.

The main facade is two storeys high with five window bays, presenting a symmetrical appearance. The central bay projects forward under a pediment. A plinth and quoins are visible. A flight of three stone steps leads to the front door, which is set within a Doric surround featuring engaged columns that support a fluted entablature and dentilled open pediment. The door itself is panelled, with a radial fanlight above, set within an arched reveal. The ground floor window openings have 8-pane sashes, with projecting cills and raised channelled architraves beneath keyed and channelled flat arches. To the right is a 12-pane sash, while a later 2-pane sash is on the left. Decorative wooden blind boxes are positioned below the ground floor windows. The first floor features a central tripartite sash with glazing bars, accompanied by an ornate 19th-century cast-iron balconette and wooden blind box beneath a keyed and channelled flat arch. The other first-floor windows are 12-pane sashes with cills. A bold dentilled eaves cornice and pediment top the facade, with a keyed oculus in the tympanum featuring moulded architrave and radial glazing bars. The roof has a flipped design, and axial and end chimneys are present.

The right return features a projecting enclosed porch with a round-headed, two-leaf, part-glazed door within an architrave, a chamfered reveal, cornice and flat hood, recessed panels, and narrow lights to the side. The rear extensions, added later, are of less architectural interest.

Inside, the entrance hall showcases a moulded dado rail, delicate plasterwork wall panelling, an overmantel, frieze, modillioned cornice, and a ceiling decorated with fan and garland motifs. Five six-panelled doors with architraves are present, along with ornate plaster cornices and friezes, featuring a central sleeping lion flanked by festoons and urns. The stairhall contains a profile cantilevered stone staircase with a ramped and wreathed handrail and fluted column balusters. A plaster-panelled balcony, modillioned cornice, and delicate plasterwork ceiling are also notable. The drawing room on the ground floor right has a moulded panel between windows, delicate plasterwork frieze, cornice, and a ceiling decorated with a fan and garlands. The dining room on the ground floor left features a moulded ceiling rose, a frieze with a sphinx motif and a dentilled cornice. The principal bedroom on the first floor right features an ornate plaster cornice and a chimneypiece with composition ornament. Other first-floor rooms have plain moulded cornices, with one to the rear right displaying a small dentilled chimneypiece. Throughout the house one finds beaded-panel doors and window shutters in architraves.

The house was built by Marris after he won a £10,000 lottery. Of the 1833 additions by H.R. Abraham of London for Lady Boynton, only the porch remains.
