Description

The Grove is a farmhouse with origins dating back to the 18th century or earlier. It was raised and re-fronted in the later 18th century, with the front altered and a rear extension added in the mid to late 19th century. The front is made of brick, while the sides and rear are constructed from coursed limestone rubble with brick dressings; the 19th-century rear section is also in brick. The front features a slate roof, while the rear has a concrete tile roof. The building is square on plan, with an earlier L-shaped section that includes a central entrance hall in the front range and later infill in the angle.

The front of the house is oriented at right angles to the street and consists of two storeys with three bays, arranged symmetrically. It has a 19th-century Doric doorcase with pilasters that support a plain entablature and hood. The entrance features a panelled door with a three-pane overlight in a panelled reveal. The windows are sashes with glazing bars, set under channelled stucco cambered arches. The central window on the first floor is a 12-pane sash in its original opening, while the others have been widened in the 19th century to 16-pane sashes. The roof has a lipped edge, and there are 19th-century end stacks. The right return facing the street has two 16-pane sashes under segmental arches. There are adjoining 19th to 20th-century ranges set back to the left, which are now used as offices and part of the house, but these are of no special interest.
