Description

Providence Cottage is a house with origins dating back to the 18th century or earlier, which was raised and re-roofed in 1829. It features later 19th-century extensions to the right and at the rear. The building is constructed of coursed limestone rubble with brick dressings and has a pantile roof. It has a central entrance hall plan and is two storeys tall with three symmetrical bays, including a single-storey one-bay extension to the right. The first floor has quoins, and the central entrance features a plain six-panel door set in a beaded wooden architrave beneath a stucco flat arch that bears a carved datestone inscribed "PROVIDENCE COTTAGE 1829." The windows are 16-pane sliding sashes with stucco flat arches and projecting cills, while the extension has a 12-pane sliding sash and a blocked doorway to the right. The house has raised brick gables with stone coping and end stacks, and the extension has a brick-coped and tumbled gable.

Inside, there is an open well staircase with a moulded handrail and plain balusters. The right side of the ground floor features an inglenook fireplace with a moulded bressumer and pine cupboards flanking the range, while the left side has a moulded stone fire-surround with a cast-iron duck's nest grate. Additionally, there is a barrel-vaulted cellar in the rear extension.
