Description

This is a medieval cross base made of limestone ashlar, located approximately 3 metres west of the road verge on the west side of Ermine Street in Appleby. The structure features a two-tier octagonal drum pedestal that sits on a square base, measuring about 30 cm high overall. The base of the octagonal shaft is broken flush with the top. It is likely that this was originally a wayside cross, although it is not in its original position. Local tradition suggests that this cross base, along with a nearby one to the east, was brought from Thornholm Priory, which is located 2 miles to the south.
