Description

Southcoates Lane Primary School is a primary school designed by Joseph H. Hirst, the City Architect, built between 1910 and 1911, with an addition made in 1990. The building is constructed of red brick, featuring a roughcast and colourwashed first floor, with brick dressings and plain tile roofs. It has a single coped side wall stack, a first floor band, brick quoins, dentillated wooden eaves, and pedimented gables, each of which contains a round window with four brick keystones.

The school is two storeys tall and has an H-plan layout with ten windows on one side and nine on the other. The windows are primarily glazing bar tilting casements, set beneath brick flat arches and stepped brick keystones. The south front, facing St John's Grove, features six windows on each floor, with the ground-floor windows being smaller. The left wing has a single small window on each floor, while the right wing has three windows on each floor. The west front, facing Southcoates Lane, includes a central pediment, eight windows to the right (with two on the left reglazed), and a single smaller window to the left. Below, there are two round glazing bar windows flanked by three larger windows. The east front has a central pedimented projection, and at the south-east corner, there is a brick office addition with coped gables, which is a single storey with a two-window range. The rear features pedimented flanking wings with blank first floors, and the north-east wing has a single ground-floor window.
