Description

This is a primary school designed by B.S. Jacobs and built in 1902. It is constructed of red brick with ashlar dressings and has hipped and gable slate roofs with two ridge stacks. The building features a plinth, sill bands, a first-floor band, moulded eaves and coped gables.

The two-and-three-storey school has a 25-window range arranged in a 7:3:8:3:7 pattern. The windows are mainly segment-headed tilting casements with glazing bars. The main hall is centrally positioned, flanked by hipped pavilions, with three-storey wings extending outwards. The main hall’s recessed centre has two windows on each floor. Flanking wings project slightly, each topped with a shouldered gable. The first floor features three tall windows, the central one with a fanlight in a stone surround with voussoirs; below, a similar arrangement with a wider central window. Projecting hipped pavilions have three windows each, with a central through-eaves dormer featuring a shouldered gable, tall window, fanlight, and voussoirs, together with smaller windows either side. The ground-floor windows have segmental hoodmoulds, and all feature keystones. A wing parallel to the facade includes a projecting section to the right with three wooden cross casements featuring hoodmoulds and keystones. Above are six smaller windows, and below are six windows, four of which have been partly reglazed. A recessed entrance bay contains an elliptical-arched doorway with brick pilasters, a moulded ashlar head with rosettes, an inscribed frieze, a swept segmental pediment containing a coat of arms, panelled doors, and a fanlight with glazing bars. Above the doors are three windows with a stone lintel. A square tower, with a coped parapet and through-eaves dormer with shouldered gable and pediment, rises above the facade, featuring a segment-headed louvred bell opening and a double slit opening above. A parallel wing at the right end has a slightly projecting left section displaying three cross casements with keystones and hoodmoulds. Above, six small windows, and below, six windows with hoodmoulds. A set-back bay includes a single window on each floor and a single window between floors. A 20th-century single-storey hipped addition is present at the right end.
