Description

The Social Services Adult Education Centre, originally a board school, was built in 1881 by W Freeman and has undergone some alterations in the late 20th century. This building features red brick construction with blue brick and ashlar dressings, topped with slate roofs that have coped gables, gabled ventilators, and three square louvred bell turrets with pyramidal roofs, all in the Gothic Revival style. It is a single-storey structure with a range of 19 windows, which include stone mullions and transoms.

The nearly symmetrical front façade has a central gable that contains a graduated window with a central triple lancet flanked by single lancets, both with blank heads and hoodmoulds. To the right, there are two flat-headed cross casements followed by a projecting porch topped with a shouldered gabled single bell turret. The pointed arched doorway features an inscribed tympanum and hoodmould, leading to a pair of doors. Further to the right, there is a gabled through-eaves dormer with a traceried triple lancet and hoodmould, flanked by single buttresses, and beyond that, a single cross casement.

Above the main entrance, there are two 2-light box dormers with glazed roofs. The right side features a projecting gable with a graduated triple window, while the left side has a gabled through-eaves dormer with a plate traceried triple lancet, flanked by single buttresses and a single cross casement beyond. Further left, there is a gabled porch with a pointed-arched door and a traceried, inscribed tympanum, flanked by two cross casements. The left gable showcases two double lancets and a round window above them, all under a common hoodmould, with four gablet ventilators above.

The left return of the building includes a projecting gable with two lancets, and to the right, a buttressed range with two through-eaves dormers featuring 3-light cross casements, flanked by single cross casements. Surrounding the property are railings with fleur-de-lys heads, a chamfered brick plinth, and brick piers topped with pyramidal caps.
