Description

The Mill Public House is a former pair of houses and an adjoining storehouse, dating from around 1820. It has been restored and altered in 1990. The building is constructed of brick and features hipped and gabled pantile roofs with three stacks on the rear wall. It is two storeys high and has a four-window range in an L-plan layout. The first-floor windows and doors have segmental heads, and all the fenestration dates from around 1990.

In the centre, there are two 12-pane sash windows with yellow brick heads, flanked by a similar sash window on the right and an 8-pane sash window on the left. Below these, there is a central door surrounded by single canted wooden bay windows, with additional single doors beyond. To the left, there is another canted wooden bay window, and to the right, a segment-headed 12-pane sash window. The left gable facing the street has an altered shop window with a reeded surround and cornice framing a glazing bar casement and a four-panel door. The hipped right wing has two small glazing bar sashes in the return angle, and below, to the left, there is a large pair of doors with a pilastered wooden surround and cornice.

This building was tenanted by the miller John Rank from 1851, and his grandson Joseph Rank was born here in 1854. The Mill Public House is included for its group value.
