Description

46, 48, and 50 King Edward Street is a group of three shops with offices above, built around 1905 and featuring late 20th-century alterations. The building is constructed of ashlar and brick, with ashlar dressings and roofs made of slate and copper, showcasing a Baroque Revival style. It has a coped parapet and stands three storeys tall with a four-window range on an acute angled corner site.

The main facade facing King Edward Street features rusticated upper floors highlighted by a giant Ionic order beneath a dentillated cornice. The central two bays are flanked by Ionic pilasters. On the first floor, there are two plain sash windows, and above them, two pairs of plain sashes, all with coved surrounds. The outer bays are adorned with dentillated pediments supported by full columns. To the left, there is a three-light window with a triple plain sash above it, while to the right, a single plain sash is accompanied by two plain sashes above, separated by a Doric column.

The ground floor contains two late 20th-century shop fronts separated by pilasters with curved brackets leading to the cornice. The corner facade features a semicircular bay window on the first floor, supported by Ionic half-columns and topped with an ornate copper half-dome. Above this, there is a hexagonal copper dome with curly volutes and a circular dormer window on each side, along with a flat-topped round lantern crowned with a flagpole. The ground floor shop front continues around both sides of the building. The Waltham Street front, to the right, displays irregular brick and ashlar banding, with Doric pilasters marking the upper floors.
