Description
Snuff Mill House is a house dating from around 1750, built for Mr William Travis, a snuff manufacturer from Hull. It is constructed of red brick in a Flemish bond pattern, with a pantiled roof. The house is three storeys high, with a two-window front beneath a double-span roof. On the ground floor, the right side features a panelled and glazed door set within an eared architrave, surmounted by a pulvinated frieze and a low pediment; to the left is a 16-pane sash window with a sill, set beneath a flat, gauged brick arch. The first floor incorporates a Venetian stair window on the right, featuring a round-headed sash with glazing bars and radial glazing, again set beneath a gauged brick arch. To the left is a 16-pane sash with a sill and a flat gauged brick arch. The second floor has two 8-pane sash windows with sills, each beneath a flat, gauged brick arch. A band runs around the building, topped by a low coped parapet, raised coped gables, and end stacks. The property is surrounded by railings that stand on a low coped wall, punctuated by tall square piers with cornices (one of which has been replaced). Two of the piers, flanking a 20th-century boarded door, retain pineapple finials. The house was originally adjacent to a snuff mill, which has since been demolished.
