Description

Newgate House and gate piers are located on Newgate Street in Cottingham and date from the late 18th century to early 19th century. The building is constructed of white brick with stone dressings and has slate roofs. The main part of the house is two storeys high and consists of five bays, originally flanked by single-storey wings on either side; the right wing has been raised in the 20th century.

The central entrance features a door with six raised and fielded panels, topped by a fanlight with radial glazing in the panelled soffit and reveals. This is set behind a half-round porch supported by columns with Tower of the Winds capitals. The windows are sash style with glazing bars and have a sill band beneath cambered wedge lintels. There is a first-floor band and a sill band for five smaller, similar sashes. The building is topped with a mutule cornice and a low, coped parapet, with coped gables and end stacks.

The left wing has two round-headed sash windows with glazing bars and fluted tympana, while the right wing has a single similar window. Each wing features a sill band and corner pilasters topped by an urn, with low coped parapets. In front of the house, there are two pairs of rusticated gate piers, each with a band, moulded cornice, and a ball finial, although one finial is missing.
