Description
The railway station and station-master's house, built in 1846 by G T Andrews for the York and North Midland Railway, features brown and red brick with sandstone dressings and a slate roof. It is two storeys high and has three bays, presenting a balanced elevation with an outshut to the left and a rear wing. The building has a plinth and a Tuscan portico at the centre bay, supported by four antae on raised bases that carry a full entablature. To the right is a four-panelled door, and to the left is a 20th-century door for the station-master's house, both topped with oblong fanlights. The ground floor includes sash windows with glazing bars set into rectangular recesses, complete with sills and flat gauged brick lintels. A cyma recta moulded sill band runs along the first floor, which has similar sashes with glazing bars on either side and a smaller sash in the centre, all under flat gauged brick lintels. The rear wall features stacks and bracketed oversailing eaves.
