Description

Nos 14 and 16 on Newbegin in Beverley are a late 17th-century building that was originally one large house. It has two storeys and an attic, constructed from red brick with a hipped tiled roof. The building features a shaped bracketed eaves cornice made of wood, which is boldly carved. There are three dormers, although the center one is modern. The façade includes seven windows with gauged brick flat arches, near flush frame sashes, and glazing bars. The central doorway is approached by wide steps that have a wrought iron guard rail and foot scrapers. The stone doorcase is adorned with a bolection moulded shouldered architrave, a pulvinated frieze, and a cornice. An early 19th-century wood traceried fanlight sits above the door. The eaves cornice wraps around the sides of the house. The rear elevation is gabled and has four windows, with one blocked on the east side, along with various other additions and alterations. Inside, the staircase is of a 1690-type, featuring a closed moulded string with a pulvinated frieze, spiral balusters, a moulded handrail, and plain newels with drop finials. There is also a back staircase with a closed string, plain newels, vase-shaped balusters, and a simply moulded handrail. The hall has a stone-flagged floor and a moulded panelled dado, while other rooms display good details and proportions from around 1810. National Monument Register Photograph shall be added at the end of the description.
