Description
The Church of Saint Martin is a church that likely dates back to the 13th century but was raised in the 19th century. It is constructed of random rubble with some ashlar and partly rendered, with later alterations made in brick. The building features a timber bellcote and a clay tile roof. It has a five-bay nave and chancel combined, along with a west bellcote and a south porch. The exterior includes diagonal and angle buttresses with offsets, a 19th-century three-light west window with rendered brick mullions, and a small segmental-headed window with iron glazing bars on the south elevation. The remaining two windows on this side are square-headed, each with three lights and 19th-century brick mullions. The pointed south door has a continuous chamfer, while another segmental-headed door features an incised heart on the keyblock of the arch, although the inscription on the heart is no longer legible. The pointed three-light east window has 19th-century tracery, and the bellcote is louvred. The gables are raised and coped, supported by shaped kneelers.
Inside, there is an 18th-century rectangular pulpit made of raised and fielded panels, complete with elegant brass candleholders. The font, dating from the 12th century, has a shallow circular basin on a cylindrical pier, resting on an unusual broad shallow base that may have been a millstone. The interior also features 18th-century turned baluster altar rails and early 19th-century pews.
