Description

House. Dated 1597 on a panel within the entrance lobby, the Manor House was largely rebuilt in the late 17th and early 18th centuries, and extended to the rear during the 18th century. It is constructed of brick and stucco, with a stone slate roof. The house has an L-shaped layout. The main elevation has two storeys and four bays, arranged 1:1:2. Features include a plinth, rusticated quoins and pilasters, with the entire entrance bay also rusticated. There’s a bolection moulded doorcase with panelled reveals and soffit; a moulded cornice above incorporates raised flowers into a hollow moulding. The ground floor has tripartite sashes with sills under channelled wedge lintels with raised keyblocks. The first floor has four sliding sashes with glazing bars on moulded sills. A moulded eaves cornice repeats the flower motif found on the hollow moulding above the entrance. Axial stacks are present, with paired flues to the right and quatrefoil flues to the left, alongside a hipped roof. The interior entrance lobby is lined with raised and fielded panelling to the left, plain panelling to the right, and plain panelling to the ceiling, incorporating a raised equal-arm cross in the centre. A 19th-century panelled and glazed interior door with intersecting glazing bars, flanked by attached columns bearing jardineres and flowers carved from solid wood, also features. The house is said to contain a carved fireplace dating from circa 1640, several panelled rooms, and other early features. Some of the panelling is believed to have originated from the old parish church (rebuilt in 1851). The site of the house is enclosed by a moat.
