Description

The Church of St Catherine is a Grade II* listed building located in Barmby Moor. The church features a 15th-century west tower and spire, while the nave and chancel were rebuilt in 1851 by J B Atkinson in the Perpendicular style. The structure is made of coursed rubble with freestone dressings on the west tower and spire, and ashlar on the nave and chancel, topped with a graduated slate roof.

The west tower is two stages high and has a spire, with a plinth at the base. It includes a slit window on the first stage and a two-light pointed belfry opening adorned with Perpendicular tracery, all beneath a crenellated parapet with crocketed corner finials. The recessed spire is capped with a cross finial.

The nave has a plinth and buttresses with offsets, featuring four two-light square-headed windows with Perpendicular tracery. The entrance is a boarded two-leaf door set in a pointed arch of two orders, supported by nook-shafts and a hood-mould with monarch stops, and is topped with a stone pentice roof.

The chancel also has a plinth and buttresses with offsets and gablets. It contains two-light pointed windows with curvilinear tracery under hood-moulds with monarch stops, and a prominent five-light pointed east window with geometrical tracery beneath a hood-mould with face stops. The gable is coped and features a flory cross finial.

Inside, there is a double-chamfered pointed tower arch that dies into responds. The roof has open principal rafters, with hammer-beam trusses alternating with arch-braced collared trusses. Additionally, there is a 14th-century octagonal font on an octagonal base with pyramidal stops.
