Description

The Gables is a house dating from the mid 17th century, which was later cased in brick during the mid 18th century. The eaves of the hall range were raised and the gables were rebuilt in the late 19th century. The building is constructed of red brick with slate roofs and originally featured a lobby entry. It has a hall range with cross-wings, forming an H-plan layout. The hall range displays a mix of window styles, including scattered fenestration of 16-pane sashes flanked by 4-pane sashes on the ground floor, and two 6-pane windows at different levels on the first floor. The eaves are adorned with a dentilled brick cornice.

The left wing, which is the domestic section, has a 16-pane sash window on the ground floor and a 4-pane sash on the first floor, both set under segmental gauged brick arches. The right wing, serving as the service area, features 4-pane sashes on both floors, also under segmental gauged brick arches. The rear elevation was completely rebuilt in 1880, showcasing a panelled door within a 19th-century door-case and 20th-century windows that include glazing bars and top-opening lights.

Inside, the hall was subdivided around 1880 to create a new stair hall and principal living room, which contains an inglenook fireplace with a chamfered bressumer. A mid 17th-century panelled door remains in a cupboard within the domestic wing. The roofs appear to have been entirely rebuilt in the 20th century.
