Description

Pritchett House is a house that was formerly an institute and shop, built in 1751 and altered in the late 18th century, around 1900, and again in 1960. The building is made of red brick, partly rendered, and features a pantile roof with raised tumbled gables and a single gable stack. It has two storeys plus a garret and a street front with three windows. The central doorway has a six-panel door and a fanlight, framed by a wooden door surround with an open pediment, pilasters, and panelled returns. On either side of the door are tripartite casement windows, with the left window dating from around 1960 and the right from around 1900. Above the door is a central glazing bar sash, flanked by two bow windows, both of which are tripartite glazing bar sashes.

Inside, the ground floor room to the right retains an original wooden fire surround with an eaved panel above the mantle, flanking round-headed cupboards with pairs of three-panel doors, and a pilaster surround with a moulded arch and keystone, along with original shaped shelves and a moulded dentilated cornice. There is also a six-panel door with a moulded surround. The room to the left features a stone fireplace from around 1900. The upper floor room has two original fireplaces with moulded wooden surrounds. The roof dates from around 1900. This house was built for Marmaduke Pritchett and was converted, along with the adjoining Leason House, into a shop with upper floor showrooms in the late 18th century. It was later converted into an institute around 1900.
